How is heavy plant monitored without replacing the controls?

By metering the large assets individually rather than reading the site incomer, and by reading run state from the panels and drives already fitted. Thermal assets cannot simply be switched off between jobs, so idle time is charged at close to running cost. It is only visible once the asset is metered on its own.

Two or three large drives starting together can set the maximum demand charge for the whole month in a few minutes.

The constraint is often the crane or the conveyor rather than the process asset everyone watches.
